The Road to a <2° Economy: A Joint Project for Protecting the Planet

“The Road to a <2° Economy” is a project being carried out by Foundation 2° in collaboration with the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). The aim of the project is to show that decarbonizing the economy is a viable goal that can be achieved through collective action. The project is being implemented by companies that are committed to supporting the attainment of national and international carbon reduction targets.

Learn more about the project: (German)

At the 2015 UN Climate Conference in Paris, the international community agreed to legally binding targets in order to limit global warming to well under 2° Celsius. The Paris Agreement means that the German economy will need to be nearly carbon emissions free by 2050.

To achieve this long-term goal, collaborative activities between companies will be essential, as the private sector is sure to play a decisive role in ushering in a “<2° economy”. Providing a vehicle for such collaboration is the aim of the “Road to a <2° Economy” project of the Foundation 2° – German Businesses for Climate Protection and WWF Germany.

The project is bringing together companies in the construction, transportation, and manufacturing sectors. How can production and supply chains be improved to reduce carbon emissions? Representatives from 10 to 12 companies in each sector are searching for collaborative solutions to this question while implementing joint projects that make a substantial contribution to lowering carbon emissions.

The overarching aim of the project is to show that a decarbonized economy is within reach. The project, which was initiated by the sponsors of Foundation 2°, is being implemented in collaboration with various companies. Funding assistance for the two-year project (2016–18) is being provided by the German Environmental Ministry (BMUB). Once the project is complete, the collaborative design of the project can be applied to other sectors, in order to promote the further decarbonization of the economy.
