Open letter to the EU Commission President and President of France

07.03.2022

The war against Ukraine makes it clear. An accelerated phase-out of fossil fuels and significant expansion of renewable energies is more necessary than ever. In a joint letter to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron, European companies provide initial impetus on how this difficult challenge can be met.

With these joint letters, the Stiftung KlimaWirtschaft would like to offer constructive support to the German Federal Government and the European Commission in their search for appropriate responses to the drastic changes in climate, security and economic policy.

Among other things, the letters offer support for finding solutions to the following challenges:

  • a significant expansion of renewables, energy efficiency and green hydrogen infrastructure to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels (gas, coal, oil).
  • an accelerated and cross-sectoral (buildings, heat, transport, industry) electrification.
  • A significant strengthening of measures for building renovation, energy efficiency and circular economy.
  • Support for citizens and businesses to deal with the significant increase in energy costs.

In addition to the Stiftung KlimaWirtschaft, the signatories of the letter include nine progressive business networks such as CLG Europe and We Mean Business Coalition from Europe and the USA. Together with the signatories, Stiftung KlimaWirtschaft will continue to engage on these issues in the German, European and international context. In doing so, we will build on our existing work on the EU Green Deal, Industrial Transformation and with the EU Industry Leaders Group.
